Hey there!! I’ve been at it again, and I have another DIY to show you!!
As fast as this summer approached, it is now going by just as fast! My oldest starts school this week and I just can’t believe it!! But we had a great summer, full of day trips, week trips, and a lot of play time! Knowing our kiddos were going to be inhabiting our playroom this summer, I worked really hard to get it into shape. This room is extremely large, so knowing what to do with the space was difficult, since it is really two smaller spaces put together. I have had this space a few different ways, but I am currently loving most of it. I still have a lot to do, but as with most things, it’s a work in progress. Currently, we have one area for lounging and watching television. The other space is where aaaaall the toys are. This space has been arranged and organized so many different ways, but I was inspired by my bestie who helped me see what the design and organization could really be, and I changed it immediately! I love the way all the bins HIDE the toys, as opposed to shelves, which just got them off the floor. I found myself feeling anxious about all the toys because I could see them!! A few shelves and bins, and voila! Organization at it’s finest.
Besides the organization, I also found the decor decisions difficult. I wanted things on the walls, but I wanted it to still have a playroom vibe and not be too concerned about things breaking or falling off of the walls. So on one side, I did a gallery wall, and I pulled in a lot of texture and some color. I also made these DIY artwork displays to put in the corner, but I was at a loss for the other side. The kids both had bookshelves and there was space to hang something above them, but I didn’t know what!
Then, I took a trip to Holland, MI this summer for a youth camp and I came across these beautiful floral posters at a sweet boutique downtown. They had a hanging kit in the same store for $15, but I knew I could do it much cheaper at home, and that’s exactly what I did! $20 later for two pieces of art, (total!) I was in business!!
Here’s how I made this DIY Hanging Print
-
Find your print.
-
Gather your supplies
-
Cut the wood to fit the print
-
Drill two holes in the top two wood pieces for the rope
-
Glue the poster within the wooden planks
-
String the Rope
-
Hang
Find your print
This can be done in any size. My prints are poster size since I wanted something to fill a big space. But I have also used this method with a print much smaller!
Gather your supplies
You will need:
- A Poster or print
- Wood shims or scraps
- Rope
- Drill
- Wood Glue
Cut your wood
For this project, I used Oak strips that I found underneath the Oak lumber at Home Depot. The size is about 1/2″ x 2″. If your print is small enough, you could use wood shims and stain them to your liking! I cut my pieces with about 2″ hanging off each side. If your print is smaller, 1″ overhang is probably enough.
Drill the holes
I made a mistake when I did this project and glued before I drilled. So, it is possible, but not ideal. I would clamp the pieces together to ensure the hole goes through each piece of wood if possible. I used a 3/4″ drill but since my rope was on the thicker side. However, if your wood is smaller, consider using twine. If you do, 1/2″ drill bit will work just fine!
Glue the poster in between the wood pieces
Measure from each end to place the print exactly in the center, mark with a pencil, and glue the pieces of wood together with the poster in between. Wait for it to dry.
String the Rope
Before cutting, I strung the rope to the length I thought I wanted it and checked it in the space first. When it hung the way I wanted it to, I measured, and cut two since I was hanging two prints and wanted them to hang symmetrically. If you are doing one print, measuring won’t be as necessary, but you should still hang it before you cut your rope, just in case! Tie the ends in the front. I like the look, plus it won’t bulge the print out as it would if it were behind.
Hang
Then, hang it up! I prefer to hang these with a fun hook, hanger, or even furniture foot! Unfortunately, one of the sides is right in front of an air vent, so I couldn’t drill into the wall there. So, I hung it with the 3m removable hooks in clear.
And there you have it! A beautiful, unique piece of art for under $10!
